A north wind creates pounding waves on Meyers Beach and a Park Ranger advises kayakers to avoid the sea caves for the day, providing safer locations for their sport.

A family from Fargo begins their first visit to the Apostle Islands at Park Service headquarters, pick up two copies of the Park Newsletter.

The family from Fargo returns to the Park building for a presentation called "The Lake is the Boss."

Four volunteers spend three days clearing the trails on Stockton Island.

The common factor in each of the four experiences above?

Funding from Friends of the Apostle Islands made it possible!

Is your membership in the Friends current?

Have you made the tax deductible contribution to the Friends that you intended to make for 2006?

There is an easy way to know the answer to those questions.

If you have received the 2006 Voluntary Passport sticker your Friends Membership
is up to date!

Thank you for your support.

You are helping make good things happen
in the Apostle Islands.

But if you don't have that gold Passport sticker on your car, boat, or the front door of your business, your Friends membership is not current.

These Islands need a multitude of Friends who will write that check for at least $30.00 and drop it in the mail. Or go on line at our web site and make your contribution there.

Then ask your employer if they will match your gift.

Some employers have done so. You won't know without asking!

Gaylord Nelson Memorial Garden Update

The new garden near the NPS sign at the corner of Washington Ave. & 4th St. in Bayfield has drawn considerable interest.

A ceremonial dedication was held Earth Day, Sat. April 22.

Planting is planned for June 3 at 9 a.m. with a June 9 backup
date in case of rain.

Financial support of the Memorial Garden is being collected through designated contributions to the Friends.

Peggy Burkman has taken the lead role on this project, and
is looking for "green thumb" volunteers. Peggy can be
reached at
pburkman@charter.net.

Here is a way to support the Memorial Garden and enjoy a
fantastic Fish Boil at Greunke's Restaurant at the same time.

On Sunday, May 21, at 5:00 Greunke's is dishing up their
famous Fish Boil for just $12.00 per plate. And all proceeds
are going to the Memorial Garden.

The estimated cost of the Gaylord Nelson Memorial Garden
is $1,500. It is a fitting reminder of the man who very early had a vision for the Apostle Islands as they should be, then did all that he could to make the Apostle Islands what they are.

Thanks to those who have already made that contribution!
