The National Park Service has given each day a theme:

You can also volunteer as part of the Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Planting beach grass, tending historic lighthouse gardens, clearing trails, assisting with events, and more. Monday, April 22: Earth Day Join the global celebration encouraging education and stewardship of the planet’s natural resources. Many parks are hosting volunteer events. You can also find ways to practice conservation at home. Earth Day began when U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin called for an environmental teach-in in 1969, inspired by the teach-ins dealing with the Vietnam War. The first Earth Day in 1970 brought together an estimated 20 million participants. In 2024, the Earth Day theme is Planet vs. Plastics, highlighting the enormous negative impact single-use plastics have on our environment.
