“I want the viewer of my art to feel the light, the moods, the beauty of the Apostle Islands” says artist Dale Whittaker who recently donated a painting as a fundraiser for Friends of the Apostle Islands. “It is my way to encourage people to experience and protect the islands.”
Jess Nuutinen, Vice President & Chief Operating Officer at Ashland’s Memorial Medical Center placed the winning bid for “Sunrise in Quiet Cove” (an 18×22 inch framed and matted watercolor painting) and will now have the opportunity to feel that “light” and see that “beauty” every day right on her living room wall.
“I’ve always had a love for art,” Nuutinen said, something she learned from her mother. Born and raised in the Ashland area, her connection to the Apostle Islands also runs deep.
“My grandfather, Dr. Bruce Culver Prentice, worked with Martin Hanson and others to persuade President Kennedy to initiate the protection of the Apostle Islands in the 1960’s,” she says.
With a love of hiking, kayaking, and camping, the Apostle Islands were a perfect place for her to grow up. Those early trips have led to a lifetime commitment to preserve the area’s natural beauty, including a recent term on the Board of Directors of Friends of the Apostle Islands.
“Art has a long history in our national parks,” said Friends Executive Director Jeff Rennicke in announcing the winning bid. “Dale’s artistry captures something almost inexpressible in the islands, a kind of mystery and a beauty that touches the heart. Friends would like to thank Dale Whittaker for his donation and Jess Nuutinen for the winning bid. Both helped to support Friends of the Apostle Islands and to make our first art auction a success.”
