Can you hear me Major Tom? Our Wave Watch Buoy (nicknamed “David Buoy”) is making a guest appearance during the month of May at the Chequamegon Food Co-op in Ashland, highlighting a chance for shoppers to “chip up” in support of Wave Watch.
“David” is one of 5 solar-powered buoys monitoring wave height, period, direction, and water temperature giving boaters real-time information, right when they need it, for five important boating locations within the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
The co-ops “Round Up for Partners” is a program that gives shoppers the option to “round up” to the next whole dollar (or more) on purchases. The proceeds from that rounding up are then donated to that month’s featured nonprofit organization to serve our community. Since the Round Up for Partners donation program was started in Spring of 2020, the Chequamegon Food Co-op has raised more than $60,000 for local causes.

Donations made to Friends of the Apostle Islands during May’s chip up program will go specifically to our Wave Watch boater safety program. Wave Watch is a cooperative effort of Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, the University of Wisconsin and the National Park Service. It’s part of our commitment to safe boating. You can see this year’s buoy locations on this page on our website.

Stop in at the Chequamegon Food Co-op, say hi to “David” and support safe boating by chipping up! The Co-op is located at 700 Main Street West in Ashland. It’s open daily, 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Update, June 16, 2025: Thanks to chip-up donations by co-op shoppers, Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore received $1,100 which will help fund our Wave Watch boater safety program. Thank you Chequamegon Food Co-Op and patrons for your generosity.
