“Our Power, Our Planet” is the theme of Earth Day 2026 and it fits right in with Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore’s focus on service and volunteerism to support the Lakeshore We Love.
Earth Day is celebrated around the world on April 22nd, every year since Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson founded the event in 1970. This year, Friends of the Apostle Islands invites you to join us for our special Earth Day event, at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 25th at the Carnegie Library in Bayfield.
The Earth Day organization says this year’s theme reflects the fundamental truth that “environmental progress doesn’t depend on any single administration or election. It’s sustained by daily actions of communities, educators, workers, and families protecting where they live and work.”
To that end, you’ll learn about our plans to work with the National Park Service to expand volunteer opportunities in the park during the summer season. You’ll be able to sign up for some exciting opportunities.
We’ll also launch the “Pick it up for the lake” season-long campaign to remove trash from area beaches and communities.
And we’ll share the vital connection of Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson to both Earth Day and the creation of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
We will also have a fresh batch of Love our Lakeshore signs available if you would like to show your support for the Lakeshore at your home or business. Donations to cover the cost will be appreciated.
