Upcoming tree removal and summer construction progress at Meyers Beach

Visitors to Meyers Beach will begin to see important early stage work this spring as the National Park Service continues progress on the new accessible path and staircase. On May 12, contractors will complete scheduled tree removal activities in the project area. While no public closures are expected, visitors may notice active crews and equipment on site throughout the day.
Why tree removal is occurring now
Tree felling must happen within a specific seasonal window to protect migratory bird species during their nesting period and to avoid disturbing roosting bats. Completing this work in spring ensures compliance with federal wildlife protection guidelines and minimizes ecological impacts.
Only the trees and vegetation located directly within the planned construction footprint are being removed. This includes the corridor where the new accessible path and improved staircase will be built. Crews are taking care to restrict disturbance to the minimum area needed for construction.
Restoration and replanting
As part of the overall project, new trees, shrubs, and native vegetation will be planted to restore the site and enhance long term ecological health. These plantings will help stabilize soils, improve habitat, and blend the completed trail and staircase into the surrounding natural landscape.
Looking ahead: Heavy construction begins in July
With tree removal work completed in May, visitors can expect heavier construction activity to begin in July, continuing through the summer and early fall. This will include earthwork, ramp and stair construction, and ongoing site restoration efforts. While the park is committed to maintaining visitor access, some increased activity and occasional delays around the project site should be anticipated.

About the project
The Meyers Beach access path project will upgrade the existing staircase to include a universally-designed path, improving access to the beach and kayak launch. This project is made possible by the Friends of the Apostle Islands Access For All initiative. The new path and staircase will provide greater accessibility for all visitors, including those with mobility challenges.

Staying safe during construction
Even though no closures are planned during the treeremoval phase, we encourage visitors to stay alert when moving through areas where crews are working. Please follow posted signage, stay on designated pathways, and give equipment operators plenty of space. Your cooperation helps keep both visitors and workers safe.
