Explorer’s guide to the Apostle Islands just released – buy a book to support the park

And thanks to his generosity, we at Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore are pleased to be able to sell a thousand copies of the book, with proceeds benefiting the park that we - and John Frank - love. Apostle...

Through a child’s eyes

Through a child’s eyes

The “Most Important Things” book project brings the islands alive through the eyes, and senses, of local fourth graders. When adults gaze out at the Apostle Islands, they may see lighthouses, or a chance for adventure, or the relaxation of miles of sandy beaches to comb. But what does a fourth grader see when she visits the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore? What catches their eyes? What are the most important things in our park to them? A new book, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore: Most Important Things, may just hold the answers. Born out of a collaboration between dedicated fourth...

The Friends reveal their new 2019 photo “MYSTIC DREAMS”

Most people experience the unforgettable sea caves and the shoreline of Devils Island by day… by kayak, by sailboat or by tour boat. It’s a totally different, awe-inspiring experience on a moonless night when only the Milky Way lights the southern sky. We are pleased to present to you a view of the island that very few people have ever experienced. Madison, Wisconsin-based photographer Joe Garza composed “Mystic Dreams” to bring together many of the core elements that make the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore such a special place: layers of ancient sandstone endlessly reshaped by Lake...

Calling All Paddlers or Would-Be Paddlers

Paddling Book Written by “Friends” Supporter, John Frank Some would argue that the best way to experience the Islands is with a paddle in your hands and a sea kayak between you and the water. John Frank’s book “Apostle Islands Water Trips” makes it possible with personal and interpretive stories supported by 25 years of paddling know-how. His inspiring narration shares mileages, camping spots, shoreline landings, maps with points of interest and trails, and even food ideas. Anyone who has paddled to the islands will find both humor and useful advice in what he has to say. John, indebted to...
